12/ 3" Spike Skiff (Pike)

12/ 3" Spike Skiff (Pike)

Description

The 12' 3 Spike Skiff is designed by Iain Oughtred (formerly known as Pike) and remains in active production through The WoodenBoat Store in Brooklin, Maine, with plans available for $123.00. This classic American sharpie-skiff design features modern glue-lap-plywood construction using stitch-and-glue techniques, making it an excellent entry-level project requiring no lofting. The flat-bottomed skiff weighs just 130 lbs with a 4' 2 beam and shallow draft, featuring lapstrake construction with flared topsides for stability. It's rigged with an unstayed sprit rig carrying 60 sq ft of sail area in a leg-o-mutton configuration, and performs well under both sail and oars due to its bottom rocker design. While no specific quantity built is documented, the design has been continuously available and was featured in Boat Design Quarterly #48.
