Tartan 34c
Description
The Tartan 34 C (often called the "Classic" to distinguish it from the later Tartan 34-2) is a timeless 34'0" (10.4 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #1904) as a high-performance offshore cruiser-racer, filling the gap between the Tartan 27 and Blackwatch 37 with balanced handling, seaworthiness, and family-friendly comfort under the CCA rule—earning quick acclaim with a 1968 SORC class win and successes in races like the Port Huron-Mackinac and Marblehead-Halifax. Built by Tartan Marine (initially via Douglass & McLeod Plastics) in Grand River, Ohio, from 1968 to 1978 with 525 hulls produced (including 25 yawls), it features a masthead sloop rig (aluminum spars), fixed stub keel with retractable centerboard for shallow draft versatility (board up: 3'3" / 0.99 m, down: 6'10" / 2.08 m), skeg-hung rudder for protected steering, and classic lines with a raked stem, moderate beam, and counter stern—delivering a hull speed of 7.3 knots and a moderate displacement/length ratio of ~280 that classifies it as a moderate cruiser, stable/stiff with good righting capability (though initially tenderer than modern fin-keelers) and a sail area/displacement ratio of 16.9 for reasonably good performance in a breeze, especially downwind. Constructed with hand-laid solid fiberglass hull and balsa-cored deck for durability, the teak-trimmed interior sleeps 5–6 (up to 7 with optional pilot berth) in a traditional layout with V-berth forward, saloon settees, U-shaped galley, nav station, and quarter berth, offering ample storage and ventilation for coastal or light offshore use,
